MEPs propose EU budget changes to tackle refugee crisis

13 Oct 15

Members of the European Parliament’s budget committee today demanded for more funds to tackle the migration and refugee crisis and to help young people get into jobs.

The committee proposed that the European Commission fully offset the cuts to the EU's research and transport networks programmes proposed in the 2016 budget, and that an additional €1.1m be spent to deal with the internal and external aspects of the crisis, and it wants the EU's long-term budget plan revised to deal with migration.

The committee also wants to continue financing the Youth Employment Initiative in 2016 even though funds in its seven-year budget was brought forward to 2014/15.

Parliament will vote on the proposals on 28 October. Talks will then be held with the European Council with the aim of reaching a deal between the two institutions in time for next year's budget.
